This hybrid course (on-site/online) serves as an introduction to basic principles of icing physics and ice accretion simulation, and is optional for all students. Emphasis is put on the relation between icing physics, meteorological aspects, important factors affecting icing and icing conditions defined in airworthiness certification requirements. This course is continuously updated following the research activities at the VKI.

The course will be delivered by Prof. Serkan Özgen, Full Professor at at Department of Aerospace Engineering, Middle East Technical University, Türkiye.

Biography: Serkan Özgen attended the VKI Diploma Course in the 1994-95 academic year and obtained the Diploma with honours. He began his Ph.D. studies at the VKI in 1995. He was awarded the Ph.D. degree in Applied Sciences with the greatest distinction by the VKI and the Free University of Brussels in 1999. He was recruited as an Assistant Professor at the Aerospace Engineering Department of the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey in 2000, later obtaining the tenure as an Associate Professor in 2007. In 2009, he was promoted to Professor. He also worked as a design specialist and flight sciences engineering manager at Turkish Aerospace during his sabbatical leaves in 2007 and later between 2019-2021. He is currently the Chairman of the Aerospace Engineering Department of the Middle East Technical University. Serkan Özgen is the author of 20 International Journal Articles, 2 Book Chapters and more than 80 International Conference Papers. His areas of professional interest are boundary-layer flows, flow instabilities, de/anti-icing fluids, airplane design, in-flight ice accretion simulation and flight mechanics.

Programme

Learning outcomes: At the end of the course the student should understand the basic vocabulary and philosophy of icing physics:

  1. Aerodynamic effects of icing
  2. Factors affecting icing and their definitions: Liquid water content, temperature, median volumetric diameter, airspeed, temperature, water catch rate, relative humidity
  3. Icing clouds: stratiform clouds, cumuliform clouds
  4. Kinds of ice: rime ice, glaze ice, mixed ice, beak ice, runback water
  5. Icing conditions defined in airworthiness certification requirements
  6. Steps of ice accretion simulation:
    1. flowfield solution,
    2. droplet trajectory and collection efficiency solution,
    3. convective heat transfer coefficient calculation,
    4. ice growth rate calculation; Messinger Model and Extended Messinger Model
