Lecture Series - Stability and Sensitivity Methods for Flow Control and Industrial Design

Tuesday 06 December 2022 - Thursday 08 December 2022

Flow instability analysis plays an active role in the identification and explanation of some of the most challenging topics of fluid mechanics. Its application in cases of industrial interest ranges from re-entry vehicles, to detached flows, up to aeroacoustic interactions and drag reduction for air vehicles.

The number different techniques available nowadays for modelling, prediction and measurement of such a phenomenon has vastly increased, offering unprecedented opportunities for the advancement of fluid dynamics understanding and its use in industrial design.

The course will introduce several aspects of the stability theory dealing with different phenomena and scenarios. Lectures will range from traditional linear stability method to parabolized stability equations and global stability. Moreover they will address compressible and incompressible flows, stability in laminar and turbulent regimes, examples of   application to relevant industrial, describing theoretical foundations, numerical methods, including new emerging data mining analysis.

The directors of this VKI Lecture Series are Prof. Eusebio Valero from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and Dr. Oliver Chazot of the von Karman Institute.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 955923.
