The VKI Large Payload Motion Hexapod, funded by Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship (VLAIO) of the Flemish Government is a cutting-edge kinetic structure.

It features a mobile platform connected to a fixed base via six synchronized linear electric actuators. It can generate motion for loads up to 1.5 tons along six axes (3 translational: Tx, Ty, Tz and 3 rotational: Rx, Ry, Rz), with all combinations possible. The system offers impressive linear and angular displacement ranges (up to ±700 mm and ±34°) and delivers high dynamic performance with speeds up to 0.8 m/s and acceleration up to 1 g.

In the coming years, this Motion Hexapod will support research on Floating Offshore Wind and Liquid Hydrogen Fuel Systems, enabling us to replicate real-world dynamics in a controlled environment, such as offshore motions for floating wind turbines or vehicle dynamics for onboard fuel systems.

We welcome collaborations and partnerships to leverage this capability for innovative projects.
