An important subsystem in surface transportation vehicles (rail bound, automotive and heavy duty) is the cooling unit. The stringent EU6 emission limits expected tocome into effect will increase dramatically the demand for cooling power in road vehicles without accepting a noise penalty. Quieter and more efficient cooling systems are also required for building ventilation, electronic cooling equipments amongst others. Manufacturers need innovative methods for reducing costs of development and testing and thus further improving their competitiveness in the global market.

Courtesy of University of SiegenIn that context, the concluding FP7 project ECOQUEST has permitted a number of major improvements of various aeroacoustic modeling approaches. These include more accurate fast-running analytical and semi-empirical methods, innovative blade design techniques, novel acoustic modeling of heat exchangers, passive noise mitigation strategies based on smart micro-perforate materials, and advanced numerical simulation of the above components. The two-days Lecture Series will expose in a pedagogic layout the advanced concepts developed jointly by a consortium of leading research institutes, academia and industries. The third day will consist in a Workshop, where their application to various realistic configurations will be discussed.

The Lecture Series director is Prof. C. Schram from the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics.
