AIRCRAFT NOISE

With a 4 to 5% annual growth of air traffic in the last years, the reduction of aircraft noise becomes imperative for the social acceptance of air transport growth. This Lecture Series reviews the different sources of aircraft noise, how noise source and propagation can be modelled, reviews solutions to mitigate noise emissions and shed light on the way humans perceive noise.
The first lecture will give and introduction to acoustics and aeroacoustics. On a scientific point of view, there is still much missing knowledge. Therefore, a review of the relevant computational methods will be given covering the fluid dynamics aspects as well as acoustic emission and propagation.
The specificities of the noise sources will then be detailed wether it comes from the airframe, the turbo machinery components of the engine or from the engine exhaust jets. Passive and active noise control strategies will be presented. It is also important to understand the current policy goals in terms of noise footprint reduction, and the relevant international legislation. Tools that are capable of assessing the impact of noise on the community will be presented and the way human beings perceive noise will be addressed.
Finally, an overview of research programmes will be performed, with emphasis on European funded projects.
The Lecture Series Directors are R. Dénos and E. Lecomte from the European Commission, E. Kors from Safran and Prof. C. Schram from the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics.
