As a matter of fact, Gas Turbine (GT) performance and reliability is greatly affected by unsteady phenomena. It is worth noting that component interaction furtherly increase the impact of unsteadiness, and then its contribution to efficiency, specific power and cooling device effectiveness must be taken into consideration during the design process. Although it is still impossible to perform full-unsteady design of gas turbines, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a fundamental tool to study unsteady phenomena in GTs, with special interest in compressor/combustor and combustor/turbine interaction analysis. Recent developments in high-fidelity CFD of GTs represent a concrete attempt to create the “virtual engine” environment that should allow for a detailed study of critical components.

The present seminar, far from being exhaustive, aims at presenting the most interesting numerical methodologies for the study of rotor/stator and compressor/combustor/turbine interaction, with special interest in multi-scale phenomena and model validation against experimental data. A summary of the seminar follows:

  • Historical perspective in unsteady component interaction in gas turbines
  • From decoupled to fully coupled methodologies for components interaction analysis
  • Blade-row interaction in compressor and turbine stages: theory and methodologies
  • Examples of applications to turbomachinery flows

Dr Simone Salvadori is post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Florence. He is also adjunct professor of Fluid Dynamics of Turbomachinery since 2009. He participated to several research projects (TATEF2, FACTOR) and collaborations (i.e. GE Oil & Gas, Ansaldo Energia) on the development and implementation of numerical methods for turbomachinery analysis and design. He is author of more than 50 publications on the unsteady interaction topic.
