During the 8th PhD symposium, the VKI graduate students will review the doctoral research carried out in the three departments of the Institute: Aeronautics and Aerospace, Environmental and Applied Fluid Dynamics, and Turbomachinery and Propulsion.
The first-year PhD students will present a poster on their research plans and some preliminary results. The second-year students will give a 15-minute talk on their research activities and progress results followed by 5 minutes of questions. The other students will give a 20-minute talk followed by 10 minutes of questions. Prominent lecturers in three application fields of fluid dynamics will give a keynote lecture opening each day of the symposium.
The talks are organized in sessions according to the following topics: "Multiphase Flows," "Aero-Thermal Investigations in Turbomachinery," "Development of Advanced CFD and Optimization," "Noise and Aeroacoustics," "Ground and Flight Experiments," and "Numerical Approach for Hypersonic and Plasma Flows"
As last year a special IFAR virtual conference (International Forum for Aviation Research http://www.ifar.aero) will be organized in collaboration with NASA. This will be a self-standing session in the VKI PhD symposium on Friday 3 March 2017 between 2:00 PM and 3:50 PM. The goal is to make this virtual conference interactive and the distribution as wide as possible among IFAR members and associated universities. The question-answer session will be accessible from all participating IFAR organizations. Two PhD members have been selected this year to present their work related to IFAR activities: Bogdan Cezar Cernat and Marc Schwalbach.
