A day of whirlwind discoveriesOn the occasion of its 60th anniversary, on Saturday 15 October 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the von Karman Institute will open its doors to the public. What’s the common thread between the conquest of space, aircraft and automotive technological developments, the performance of wind farms, nanotechnology, pedestrian comfort in urban environments, the safety of our nuclear power stations and the performance of our top athletes? The intensive study of Fluid Dynamics at the von Karman Institute!
This exceptional day is a special occasion to discover classified laboratories and world-unique wind tunnels such as the Plasmatron, which simulates the conditions of the re-entry of a spatial vehicle in the atmosphere or the Longshot, a blowdown wind tunnel to perform hypersonic tests up to 15-times the speed of sound.
Children as from 8 years of age will discover aerodynamics through adapted experiments. Guided tours will be in Dutch, English and French.

Ontdekken geblazen!Op zaterdag 15 oktober 2016 van 10 tot 16 uur opent het von Karman Instituut voor stromingsdynamica, ter gelegenheid van zijn 60ste verjaardag, zijn deuren voor het grote publiek voor groot en klein. Wat heeft de verovering van de ruimte met de technologische ontwikkeling van de vliegtuigen en auto’s, het omzettingsrendement van windturbines met de nanotechnologieën, het comfort van de voetgangers met de veiligheid van onze kerncentrales en de prestaties van onze topsporters te maken? De grondige studie van de stromingsdynamica bij het von Karman Instituut!
Die uitzonderlijke dag is een unieke gelegenheid om “verboden” plaatsen te ontdekken zoals de Longshot, een hogesnelheidswindtunnel voor hypersone testen tot 15 keer de geluidsnelheid, of de Plasmatron, een plasma generator die thermische belasting simuleert gedurende de terugkeer van een ruimtetuig in de atmosfeer.
Kinderen vanaf 8 jaar kunnen deelnemen aan allerhande experimenten. Rondleidingen worden gegeven in het Nederlands, Frans of Engels.

Une journée de découvertes décoiffantes!A l’occasion de son 60ème anniversaire, l’Institut von Karman ouvre les portes de ses installations et souffleries ce samedi 15 octobre 2016 de 10h à 16h pour le plaisir des petits et grands. Quel est le point commun entre la conquête spatiale, le développement technologique des avions et voitures, le rendement des éoliennes, les nanotechnologies, le confort des piétons en zone urbaine, la sécurité de nos centrales nucléaires et les performances de nos sportifs ? C’est l’étude poussée de la dynamique des fluides réalisée à l’Institut von Karman!
Les participants auront l’occasion unique de découvrir des lieux interdits au public et des installations uniques au monde telles que la soufflerie Longshot, une soufflerie à rafales pour des essais en hypersonique qui vont jusqu’à 15 fois la vitesse du son, ou le Plasmatron qui simule les conditions de réentrée d’un véhicule spatial dans une atmosphère. Lors de cette journée exceptionnelle, les enfants, dès 8 ans, seront les bienvenus et pourront découvrir l’aérodynamique au travers d’expériences adaptées à leur âge. Les visites et expériences se dérouleront au choix en français, néerlandais ou anglais.
