Post-doctoral Programme

Continuation of a PhD

The post-doctoral research programme allows selected top level researchers to pursue their research after the PhD, taking profit of the unique research facilities of VKI.

Center of Excellence

The von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics operates a comprehensive range of experimental and computational facilities covering virtually all aspects of fluid mechanics. Support is provided by facility engineers, instrumentation and electronic laboratories, IT and HPC department, a technical library and a publishing office with photolab, a computer-aided drawing/design office and well-equipped workshops.

The benefits for the Post-doctoral candidate are considerable, allowing to perform research based on the outstanding facilities and unique experience available at the VKI and to work in an international top level environment with colleagues from all over Europe.

Access to an extraordinary set of wind tunnels
covering all regimes, from low subsonic to hypersonic flow.

Access to the internationally recognised VKI short course programme: VKI Lecture Series.

BAEF fellowships for the US citizens

The Belgian American Educational Foundation (B.A.E.F) in collaboration with the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI) encourages applications for fellowships for advanced studies or research at VKI. The offer is directed to citizens of the United States of America and valid for the academic year 2021-2022. The applications for the BAEF-VKI fellowship are subject to the standard conditions of BAEF fellowships, see details on the BAEF webpage BAEF-fellowships. In particular, the grants carry a monthly stipend of - $ 2,333.30 per month for Master's or Ph.D. students ($ 28,000/12) and - $ 2,666.60 per month for Post-doctoral Fellows ($ 32,000/12)

The so-called “BAEF-VKI-fellowships” are for any of the following academic programs organized at VKI:

1. The VKI Research Master program of academic year 2021-2022 (starting 1 October, 2021 and finishing on 1 July, 2022), which is a one year accredited study program (60 ECTS) at master-after-master level and continuously offered since 64 years. It complements the master programs of universities with an in-depth research oriented specialization in fluid dynamics. Independently from the VKI-BAEF fellowship, VKI fellowships are also available and there is no tuition fee for US citizens. Applications for VKI fellowships are still open (https://www.vki.ac.be)
2. The VKI PhD program
3. The VKI Postdoc program
The above VKI programs are all concerned with advanced fluid dynamics applied to the fields of aeronautics, hypersonics, space, turbomachinery, propulsion, green environment, sustainable energy production and industrial processes.

What are the steps to obtain the VKI-BAEF fellowship:

1) The deadline for the BAEF-Fellowship 2021-2022 is  October 31, 2021.

2) Fellows should be in residence in Belgium during the tenure of their fellowship and stay for a period of 12 months. If the Fellow chooses to remain in Belgium for less than 12 months,  the stipend will be prorated accordingly. The minimum fellowship period is 6 months.

3) Applications for the 2021-2022 (download the application form here): Fellowships must be submitted as electronic documents in pdf format attached to an email sent not later than October 31, 2020 to  This email address is being protected from spambots.
