Additional funding from the Walloon Region's "Fonds pour une transition juste" for the creation of the test center on the District Cleantech site in Charleroi
18 janvier 2024- La Wallonie se positionne comme un leader de la transition énergétique grâce à la création du VKhyLab
Le gouvernement wallon a annoncé hier la sélection de 62 projets retenus dans le cadre de l'appel à projets publics du Fonds pour une transition juste. Parmi ces projets, on retrouve la création du VKhyLab , un laboratoire d'essais et de recherche dédié aux technologies de l'hydrogène. Le VKhyLab en collaboration avec le gouvernement fédéral sera donc construit sur deux sites parfaitement complémentaires et stratégiquement situés en Belgique : l’un au District Cleantech à la Porte Ouest de Charleroi pour lequel le fonds de transition a octroyé 8,1M€ en sus de la contribution fédérale, et l’autre au Port d’Anvers.
L’ambition du VKhyLab est sans précédent en Belgique et en Europe, créer un centre d’essais ouvert, coordonné et opéré par le VKI, en collaboration avec ses partenaires présents sur le site, offrant des équipements de pointe et des infrastructures uniques et exceptionnelles aux utilisateurs qui pourront manipuler d’importants volumes d’hydrogène en toute sécurité.
Les applications du site Ditrict Cleantech couvriront un large éventail de secteurs, notamment de la production d’hydrogène vert, de la combustion de l'hydrogène (décarbonisation de l'industrie lourde), de la mobilité verte (en incluant l’aérospatial), de l’ingénierie des matériaux, de la sécurité et de la formation et/ou reconversion de profils professionnels liés à l'économie de l'hydrogène.
La création du VKhyLab est une excellente nouvelle pour la Wallonie. Elle positionne la région comme un leader de la transition énergétique et contribue à la création d'emplois et d'opportunités dans le secteur des technologies propres.

Wallonia positions itself as a leader in the energy transition with the creation of the VKhyLab
The Walloon government announced yesterday the selection of 62 projects selected as part of the public call for projects from the Just Transition Fund. Among these projects is the creation of the VKhyLab, a testing and research laboratory dedicated to hydrogen technologies. The VKhyLab , in collaboration with the federal government, will therefore be built on two perfectly complementary and strategically located sites in Belgium: one in the District Cleantech at the Porte Ouest in Charleroi, for which the Transition Fund has granted €8.1m in addition to the federal contribution, and the other in the Port of Antwerp.
The ambition of the VKhyLab is unprecedented in Belgium and Europe: to create an open test center, coordinated and operated by the VKI, in collaboration with its partners on the site, offering state-of-the-art equipment and exceptional infrastructures to users who will be able to handle large volumes of hydrogen in complete safety.
The District Cleantech site's applications will cover a wide range of sectors, including the production of green hydrogen, hydrogen combustion (decarbonisation of heavy industry), green mobility (including aerospace), materials engineering, safety and the training and/or retraining of professional profiles linked to the hydrogen economy.
The creation of the VKhyLab is excellent news for Wallonia. It positions the region as a leader in the energy transition and contributes to the creation of jobs and opportunities in the clean technology sector.
