WINGS 3: Wallonia continues its efforts to maintain its leadership in carbon-free aeronautics

A new phase has been confirmed for a sector in full transition. The third phase of the WINGS Innovation Partnership has been approved by the Walloon Government. This support from the Walloon Region will enable intensive research into decarbonising aeronautics to continue, while strengthening the position of Walloon players active in the sector.

Willy Borsus, Vice-President and Walloon Minister for the Economy, Yves Delatte, CEO of Sonaca, and François Lepot, CEO of Safran Aero Boosters, and their 17 partners are kicking off the third phase of the Innovation Partnership, known as WINGS (Walloon Innovations for Green Skies). Motivated by the results achieved over the past three years, these partners from Wallonia's aerospace industry have renewed their commitment to working towards a low-carbon aircraft by 2035 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

The ambitious decarbonisation milestones for the aeronautical industry, aiming for a 30% reduction in fuel consumption by 2035 and carbon neutrality by 2050, require the development and validation of breakthrough technological innovations in both products and manufacturing processes. For the past 3 years, the WINGS Innovation Partnership has been involved in technological developments within partner companies, SMEs and research centres. The third phase of funding will enable these technologies to mature further.

The VKI team is proud to be collaborating on this ambitious project, working hand in hand with Safran Aero Boosters to pioneer advancements in new compressor technologies, heat exchangers, and instrumentation for test benches. Additionally, our collaboration with Sonaca is focused on reducing the noise impact of leading edges.

WINGS 3 : La Wallonie poursuit l’effort pour conserver son leadership dans l’aéronautique décarbonée

C’est une nouvelle phase qui se confirme pour un secteur en pleine transition. La troisième phase du Partenariat d’Innovation WINGS a été validée par le Gouvernement wallon. Un soutien de la Région wallonne qui permettra de poursuivre la recherche intensive pour décarboner l’aéronautique tout en renforçant la position des acteurs wallons actifs dans ce secteur.

Willy Borsus, Vice-Président et Ministre wallon de l’Économie ; Yves Delatte, CEO de Sonaca, et François Lepot, CEO de Safran Aero Boosters et leurs 17 partenaires donnent le coup d’envoi de la troisième phase du Partenariat d’Innovation, baptisé WINGS (Walloon Innovations for Green Skies). Motivés par les résultats obtenus ces trois dernières années, ces partenaires du secteur aéronautique wallon ont renouvelé leur engagement pour tendre vers un avion bas carbone d’ici 2035 et atteindre la neutralité carbone en 2050.

Les jalons ambitieux de la décarbonation de l’aéronautique visant une réduction de la consommation en carburant de 30% pour 2035 et une neutralité carbone en 2050 nécessitent le développement et la validation d’innovations technologiques de rupture tant sur les produits que sur leurs procédés de fabrication. Le Partenariat d’Innovation WINGS participe depuis 3 ans aux développements technologiques au sein des entreprises, PME et centres de recherches partenaires. La troisième phase de financement permettra de poursuivre la maturation de ces technologies.

Le VKI est fier de collaborer à ce projet ambitieux, travaillant main dans la main avec Safran Aero Boosters pour mettre au point de nouvelles technologies de compresseurs, d'échangeurs de chaleur et d'instrumentation pour les bancs d'essai. De plus, notre collaboration avec Sonaca se concentre sur la réduction de l'impact sonore des bords d'attaque.
