Flemish Government supports VKI for research on energy transition: 4 million euros over the next 2 years

To tackle the challenges of climate change at an accelerated pace, Flanders and the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI) are going to strengthen cooperation on energy transition. Flemish Minister for Innovation Jo Brouns has therefore decided to grant VKI support totalling 4 million euros over the next two years for research on hydrogen applications and renewable wind energy. This support will allow VKI to strengthen its knowledge portfolio in this field, and subsequently valorise it with Flemish industrial partners.

VKI will conduct research on optimising the performance of electrolysis, on hydrogen production by electrified cracking of light molecules such as ammonia or methane, and on designing fuel tanks for liquid hydrogen. With the first topic VKI aims to contribute to an economically interesting production of green hydrogen; the second topic is a necessary technology to import energy through the future Flemish hubs in the form of ammonia, and with the third topic VKI is looking at decarbonising transport applications. In the field of wind energy, VKI will focus on developing high-performance models that can provide a good prediction of the energy yields of offshore wind farms, with turbines fixed on the seabed, but equally further out at sea with turbines on floating platforms.

VKI's research activities will start from early 2024 and will benefit from 2 years of support, 2 million euros per year so for 4 million euros in total.

Over the last 3 years, VKI has already made strong efforts to valorise the competences from these domains to the new domain of energy transition. This valorisation happened to a large extent in new collaborations with Flemish partners, both from the academic and industrial world, including through active participation in the Flemish spearhead cluster operation, e.g. via the Blue Cluster for the marine and maritime economy and via Catalisti for sustainable chemistry, but also through participation in the operation of other clusters such as Waterstofnet.

Vlaamse Overheid steunt VKI voor onderzoek rond energietransitie: 4 miljoen euros in twee jaar tijd

Om de uitdagingen van de klimaatverandering versneld aan te pakken, gaan Vlaanderen en het von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI) de samenwerking op het gebied van energietransitie versterken. Vlaams Minister van Innovatie Jo Brouns heeft daarom beslist om aan VKI de twee volgende jaren steun toe te kennen van in totaal 4 miljoen euro voor onderzoek rond waterstoftoepassingen en hernieuwbare wind-energie. Deze steun zal aan het VKI toelaten om zijn kennisportfolio in dit domein te versterken, en die nadien met Vlaamse industriële partners te valorizeren.

VKI zal onderzoek verrichten rond de optimisatie van de performantie van elektrolyse, rond waterstofproductie door het geëlektrificeerd kraken van lichte molecules zoals ammoniak of methaan, en rond het ontwerpen van brandstoftanks voor vloeibare waterstof. Met het eerste onderwerp wil VKI een bijdrage leveren aan een economisch interessante productie van groene waterstof; het tweede onderwerp is een noodzakelijke technologie om energie via de toekomstige Vlaamse hubs in te voeren onder de vorm van ammoniak, en met het derde onderwerp kijkt VKI naar het decarbonizeren van transporttoepassingen. In het domein van de wind-energie zal VKI inzetten op de ontwikkeling van performante modellen die een goede voorspelling kunnen geven van de energie-opbrengsten van offshore windparken, met turbines die vast opgesteld staan op de zeebodem, maar evengoed verder in zee met turbines op drijvende platformen.

De onderzoeksactiviteiten van VKI zullen van start gaan vanaf begin 2024 en zullen 2 jaar steun genieten, 2 miljoen euro per jaar dus voor 4 miljoen euro in totaal.

De voorbije drie jaren heeft het VKI van die domeinen een absolute topprioriteit gemaakt, en het Instituut dankt Minister Brouns en de Vlaamse Regering voor deze vitale steun, die zal toelaten om kennisopbouw én valorizatie te versnellen en te verdiepen.”

Jo Brouns, Vlaams Minister van Innovatie: “Vlaanderen wil koploper zijn op het vlak van technologie in waterstof. Daarvoor hebben we ook een eerste Vlaamse waterstofvisie uitgewerkt. Met de steun aan het VKI instituut versterken we de kennisbasis voor een duurzame transitie, waar naast elektrificatie ook duurzame brandstoffen en waterstof een grote rol zullen spelen. De expertise van het VKI komt zo van pas, onder andere in waterstof-toepassingen voor de decarbonisatie van onze industrie en het zwaar transport.”

De laatste 3 jaar heeft VKI al sterk ingezet om de competenties uit deze domeinen te valorizeren naar het nieuwe domein van energietransitie. Deze valorizatie gebeurde in sterke mate in nieuwe samenwerkingsverbanden met Vlaamse partners, zowel uit de academische als uit de industriële wereld, o.a. door actieve participatie in de Vlaamse speerpuntclusterwerking, bijv. via de Blauwe Cluster voor de mariene en maritieme economie en via Catalisti voor de duurzame chemie, maar ook door deelname in de werking van andere clusters zoals Waterstofnet.

Pour relever plus rapidement les défis du changement climatique, la Flandre et le VKI (von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics) vont renforcer leur coopération dans le domaine de la transition énergétique. Le ministre flamand de l'Innovation, Jo Brouns, a ainsi décidé d'accorder au VKI un soutien de 4 millions d'euros au cours des deux prochaines années pour la recherche sur les applications de l'hydrogène et l'énergie éolienne renouvelable. Ce soutien permettra au VKI de renforcer son portefeuille de connaissances dans ce domaine et de le valoriser ensuite auprès de partenaires industriels flamands.

Le VKI mènera des recherches sur l'optimisation des performances de l'électrolyse, sur la production d'hydrogène par craquage électrifié de molécules légères telles que l'ammoniac ou le méthane, et sur la conception de réservoirs de carburant pour l'hydrogène liquide. Avec le premier sujet, le VKI vise à contribuer à une production économiquement intéressante d'hydrogène vert ; le deuxième sujet est une technologie nécessaire pour importer de l'énergie à travers les futurs hubs flamands sous la forme d'ammoniac, et avec le troisième sujet, le VKI cherche à décarboniser les applications de transport. Dans le domaine de l'énergie éolienne, le VKI se concentrera sur le développement de modèles performants capables de fournir une bonne prédiction des rendements énergétiques des parcs éoliens offshore, avec des turbines fixées au fond de la mer, mais également plus loin en mer avec des turbines sur des plates-formes flottantes.

Les activités de recherche de VKI commenceront début 2024 et bénéficieront de 2 ans de soutien, à raison de 2 millions d'euros par an, soit 4 millions d'euros au total.

Avec le soutien de l'institut VKI, nous renforçons la base de connaissances pour une transition durable, où, en plus de l'électrification, les carburants durables et l'hydrogène joueront également un rôle majeur. L'expertise du VKI sera donc très utile, notamment dans les applications de l'hydrogène pour la décarbonisation de notre industrie et du transport lourd".

Au cours des trois dernières années, le VKI a déjà déployé des efforts considérables pour valoriser les compétences de ces domaines dans le nouveau domaine de la transition énergétique. Cette valorisation a eu lieu dans une large mesure dans le cadre de nouvelles collaborations avec des partenaires flamands, tant du monde académique qu'industriel, y compris par une participation active au fonctionnement des clusters flamands, via le Blue Cluster pour l'économie marine et maritime et via Catalisti pour la chimie durable, mais aussi par la participation au fonctionnement d'autres clusters tels que Waterstofnet.
