61st Graduation Ceremony

The 61st graduation ceremony of the Research Master in Fluid Dynamics took place at the von Karman Institute this 30th of June 2017.

The ceremony started with Prof. Herman Deconinck, dean of the faculty and its introductory remarks and report on the current academic year. A special presentation has then be done by Alessia Simonini, PhD candidate, on the a unique research activity at VKI: the Sloshing PARabolic fliGht Experiment (SPARGE).

This was followed by the speech of Professor Jean-Jacques Dordain, chairman of the VKI Board of Directors who congratulated the graduates on behalf of the VKI Board of Directors. Then Dr. Thomas Killion, on behalf of NATO’s Science and Technology Organization, stressed the importance of VKI for the NATO countries. Prof. Benoît Marinus, Professor at the Royal Military Academy, former Diploma Course student in 2006-2007 and PhD candidate at VKI from 2007 to 2012, shared his experience at the von Karman Institute with the Graduates and underlined the importance of the VKI international network.

The dean of the faculty had then the pleasure to announce that:

The Theodore von Karman Prize and the Prince Alexandre of Belgium Award for the Best Presentation were attributed to Stefano Boccelli with his project entitled: "Simulations of the Electron concentration in the wake of meteors and application to radio observations".

Davide Scandella was awarded the Belgian Government Prize. His project was entitled "Design of a burner simulator for aerothermal turbine testing".

The Excellence in Experimental Research has been given to Dominique Joachim , while the Excellence in Numerical Research has been given to Maxim Van Cappelen.

We would like to congratulate the Graduates who received their diplomas:

with honours: Diederik Beckers, Stefano Boccelli, Ruben Di Battista, Joachim Dominique, Adriana Enache, Şeyma Pınar Eneren Aksoy, Maria Faruoli, Vincent Giangaspero, Zoé Jardon, Marek Pátý, Riccardo Rubini, Davide Scandella, Francisco Torres Herrador, Maxim Van Cappellen, Willca Villafana and Alexandre Zapata.

Hristiana Velichkova was also enrolled in the Research Master and was awarded the Best Collaboration Award by the VKI Alumni Association.

The dean of the VKI faculty announced that the Best PhD presentation award of the Phd Symposium 2017  was attributed to Alejandro Alvarez Laguna for his work on "Multi-Fluid Modeling of Magnetic Reconnection in Astrophysical and Laboratory Plasmas", while the best poster awards were attributed to:

  • Best Poster 2017 in the Environmental and Applied Fluid Dynamics Department - Sara Porchetta “The Effect of the Wave Wind Interaction on the Energy Harvesting of Offshore Wind Turbines”
  • Best Poster2017 in the Turbomachinery and Propulsion Department - Tânia Cação Ferreira “Influence of Gas-to-wall Temperature ratio on Bypass Transition”
  • Best Poster 2017 in the Aeronautics and Aerospace Department - Joffrey Coheur “Uncertainty Quantification of Aerothermal Flow Simulation Through Low-Density Ablative Thermal Protection Materials”

Finally, Mr. Alexander Zapata,  representative of the Research Master students, gave a vote of thanks to the guests.
