Multidisciplinary simulations of wind farms in complex environments

This Lecture Series on “Multidisciplinary simulations of wind farms in complex environments” is part of the H2020 Zephyr project. It will be followed by a one-day Zephyr Final Public Workshop entitled "Large-scale wind turbines complex terrain effect and urban wind energy: application cases". The lecture series from 18 to 20 November will take place at VKI, the final public workshop on 21 September will take place at the Bluepoint Conference Center.

This Lecture Series will present a state-of-the-art of advanced meso/microscale atmospheric models for the assessment of the impact of real terrain/urban landscapes and local atmospheric effects on the predicted aerodynamic performance, structural dynamics and noise emissions. Obviously, human factors become a critical issue when implementing wind turbines in densely populated urban environments. The inter-dependencies between those factors (visual vs. acoustic effects, age or occupation, etc.), which complicate further the analysis of the motivations for a community to endorse or reject a new project, will be addressed as well.

The directors of the lecture series are Prof. Christophe Schram and Dr. Sophia Buckingham from the von Karman Institute.
