Blast wave mitigation by aqueous foams

Liquid foams, dispersion of a gas phase into a liquid phase, are used for many applications : cosmetics, food industry, oil recovery… Due to their excellent ability to dissipate energy, those materials are also used to mitigate blast effects. Over the past fifty years, several attenuation mechanisms were identified, however the foam parameters are poorly controlled in most of the studies. The understanding of the underlying dissipation mechanisms, and the effect of each foam parameter on the attenuation therefore remain an active matter of debate.

We address this issue by studying the the attenuation of a shock wave, created with a shock tube, in a liquid foam, whose parameters can be varied independently from one another. In a first part, I will show the significant effect of the foam liquid fraction on the pressure attenuation (plateau level and pressure rise time), and will briefly discuss the effect of bubble size and gas composition. In a second part, I will present results at the bubble scale: using a shadowgraph technique, we investigate the destabilization process of a soap bubble subject to a shock wave.
