Aeroacoutsics test in L-1For civil transportation, due to the permanent increase in ground and air traffic on the one hand, and ever stringent regulations applying to noise emissions on the other hand, aeroacoustics has become a key component in an engineer’s background for the development of more competitive systems in these fields. In military applications, stealth operation of air reconnaissance/combat vehicles and drones imposes severe limits on the maximum allowable noise emissions as well. Significant efforts are being invested worldwide to develop modeling approaches, based on methods ranging from empirical databases to CPU-intensive scale-resolved simulations. Any of these novel methods requires a proper validation through experimental correlation. Moreover, the multi-physical mechanisms involved in certain configurations, with flow or acoustic control for example, cannot yet be simulated with enough reliability to be dispensed from running experiments. However, there are relatively few aero-acoustic facilities compared to the availability of regular aerodynamic wind tunnels, to enable such research. This stems in good part from the specific and often contradictory qualities have to be simultaneously met by the experimental mock-up for good flow quality, low background noise, absence of acoustic reflection/refraction effects, etc. In aero-acoustic testing, installation effects are never completely avoidable, such that ad-hoc procedures are always involved to permit an unambiguous correlation between tests and models. A great deal of these methods isn’t extensively published in spite of their importance, and is almost never taught in courses on wind tunnel testing. Also, the last years have seen a strong regain of interest in source localization and quantification methods, with numerous new algorithms being proposed. Now is the right moment to synthesize in a course format the outcomes of these developments.

This lecture series supported by STO will gather and present in a didactic way the know-how developed over the past decade about the design and operation of aero-acoustic experiments. The objective is to develop an unprecedented course material, covering the fundamentals of aeroacoustics, best practices and design guidelines for the mock-up itself, the instrumentation, and processing including corrections enabling correlation with numerical or analytical models. The targeted application fields are ground transportation (essentially automotive) and aeronautical applications. At the end of the course, the attendees should have the required autonomy to design and run small or large-scale aero-acoustic facilities, design the test matrix, and perform the advanced data processing required for their purpose.

The lecture series director is Prof. Christophe Schram from the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics.
