As a first part of the event, the Open Workshop/Forum will be focused on the state of the art in the different technologies involved in the Key Green Technologies (KGTs) of GRAIN2. The lectures from Europe and China, delivered by both GRAIN2 partners and invited non-GRAIN2 speakers, will provide information about the technologies under development to enhance greener aviation. The presentations will be linked with the most promising technological developments, which will contribute to minimize the impact of aviation to the environment. The four following KGTs will presented:
- KGT1: Propulsion related technologies
- KGT2: Flight physics and aero-acoustics
- KGT3: Environmentally friendly materials and advanced structures
- KGT4: Advanced CNS/ATM systems for sustainable air transport.
The outcome of the EU-China Network GRAIN2 will be presented in the context of Europe's Vision for Aviation 'Flightpath 2050' through the aviation related research within the EU Framework Programme Horizon 2020 . It represents an intermediate step for preparing possible future EU-China coordinated research activities.The workshop will be of interest to engineers and researchers involved in areas of greening technologies for aviation, as well experts, decision-makers and officials interested in aeronautics co-operation between China and Europe. The FP7 network support action GRAIN2, co-funded by the EU and China aims to provide inputs and contributions to technology roadmaps for greening aviation for meeting future requirements such as the reduction of aviation emissions, fuel consumption, perceived noise, decarbonized smart structures and green management of air traffic. For achieving progress towards the identified targets, efforts in green technologies will be directed to three major lines: Air vehicle, Air Traffic Management Systems and Sustainable Energies. In this Open Workshop/Forum, greening technologies will be addressed in the following three areas:
i) Greening technologies for aircraft and aero-engines: innovative methods and tools for optimized aircraft drag and noise and aero-engines with highest fuel efficiency, optimized propulsion/airframe system allowing low level exhaust emissions, prediction of effects of aircraft emissions by new engines technologies and alternative fuels, multidisciplinary/multi-physics modelling, simulation, optimization and control, new multifunction materials, including environmentally green materials and smart structures;
ii) Greening the operational environment: utilization of environmentally friendly chemicals in production, operation and maintenance, optimised handling and control of the engine exhaust emissions, such as to low or zero emission aircraft taxing, new low-emission ATM concepts;
iii) Reducing the carbon footprint of aviation via sustainable alternative fuels: development of biofuels for greenhouse gas emission reduction; increase the knowledge of acceptance conditions at engine aircraft level, optimization of the aircraft/ alternative fuel combination.
GRAIN2 aims to identify innovative RTD methods, design tools implemented on high-performance computer (HPC) based simulation environment, green performance based navigation and surveillance information platforms for the different Key Green Technology (KGTs) areas according to the needs of the aeronautics industry. International Greener Networking critical outcomes of GRAIN2 are a green leverage in the context of the new Flight Path 2050 and Chinese Aeronautical Mid-term Development Strategy 2020 Visions for Aircraft and launching new H2020 EU-China Coordinated Calls.
