Christopher Chahine wins the best presentation award at the ASMO-UK conference

This day, Christopher Chahine wins the best presentation award at the ASMO-UK conference for the presentation of his paper written with T. Verstraete. The subject is related to the Multidisciplinary Optimization of a Transonic Fan Blade for High Bypass Ratio Turbofan Engines.

The 10th ASMO UK / ISSMO conference on Engineering Design Optimization Product and Process Improvement was held from June 30th – July 1st, 2014 at the Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands. The ASMO-UK/ISSMO series of conferences provides an opportunity for researchers on multi-disciplinary optimisation from within and outside the UK and The Netherlands to get together and share experience within a growing community.

Conference topics include, but are not exclusive to:

  • Topology, shape and sizing optimisation
  • Structural optimisation (FEM, BEM, MBS etc)
  • Fluid optimisation
  • Multi-disciplinary / multi-physics optimisation
  • Industrial applications (all fields)
  • Optimisation for MEMS, nanotechnology, etc
  • Design, package, cost or process optimisation
  • Reliability and robust design optimisations
  • Optimisation under uncertainty, noise
  • Numerical aspects of optimisation
  • Optimisation algorithms
  • Multi-objective optimisation
  • Design of experiments, sampling techniques
  • Meta-modelling, surrogate models
  • Sensitivity analysis
  • Distributed computing in design optimisation
  • Integration of optimisation in the design and manufacturing process
  • Constraint handling (manufacturing constraints, non-constant constraints etc)
  • Inverse problems
  • Education in engineering optimisation

58th graduation day of the Research Master in Fluid Dynamics

The 58th graduation day of the Research Master in Fluid Dynamics took place at VKI this 27th of June 2014.
The ceremony started with Dr. Jean Muylaert and its introductory remarks and report on the Academic Year. This was followed by the speech of Professor Jean-Pierre Contzen, VKI chairman of the Board who congratulated the graduates on behalf of the VKI Board of Directors. Then Major General Albert Husniaux, on behalf of NATO’s Science & Technology Organization, stressed the importance of VKI for the NATO countries. The ceremony was highlited by the speech of Dr. S. ZEMSCH form BMW Group Munich and former Diploma Course student and by the speech given by Professor Herman Deconinck on behalf of Dr. Philippe Mettens, president of the Belgian Science Policy Office who congratulated the new graduates.

We have the pleasure to announce that Sebastian Willeke won the Theodore von Karman Prize with his project entitled: "Adjoint Optimization of an Internal Cooling Channel U-Bend". Aurore Lafond was awarded The Belgian Government Prize. Her project was related to the numerical Modelling of Boiling. The Prince Alexandre of Belgium Award for the Best Presentation given by Princess Léa of Belgium was attributed to Pedro García Carrascal with a project on "Sizing of Irregular Particles using Laser Back-Scattering techniques". The Excellence in Experimental Research has been given to Emre Barlas with a project on "Experimental Investigation of wind turbine / Farm wakes in a Boundary layer wind tunnel". The Excellence in Numerical Research has been given to Tamás Horváth with a project on "Adjoint Based Goal Oriented error Estimation for Adaptive Petrov-Galerkin Finite Element Methods".

We would like to congratulate the graduates who received their diplomas:

  • With honours: Emre Barlas, Gabriele Bonucci, Andreu Carbó Molina, Matteo Chiatto, Pedro García Carrascal, David González Cuadrado, Gian Luca Gori, Tamás Horváth, Aurore Lafond, Aude Lahalle, Francesco Guido Ornano, Jorge Saavedra García, Pablo Solano López, Orkun Temel and Sebastian Willeke.
