About

Heat exchangers are essential devices used to transfer heat between two or more fluids, playing a critical role in various industrial and everyday applications. They are found in systems ranging from power plants and chemical processing units to household appliances like refrigerators and air conditioners. The importance of heat exchangers lies in their ability to improve energy efficiency and process performance. Despite their widespread use, ongoing research is crucial to enhance their efficiency, reduce costs, and develop new applications, particularly in emerging fields such as renewable energy and advanced manufacturing.

This hybrid lecture series offers a deep dive into the science, technology, and future potential of heat exchangers. The program begins with an introduction to fundamental concepts, including experimental and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approaches to characterize performance. Subsequent sessions will explore cutting-edge topics such as machine learning applications for optimization, two-phase flow dynamics, additive manufacturing for surface conditioning, and modeling surface roughness impacts. The series will culminate with discussions on future research directions, including space applications and the use of nanofluids to boost heat transfer. This series is designed to equip participants with both foundational knowledge and insights into cutting-edge advancements in the field of heat exchangers.

This course is recommended for engineers, researchers, and students who are involved in or interested in the design, operation, and optimization of thermal systems. It is particularly beneficial for those working in industries such as energy, aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing, where heat exchanger technology is pivotal. Participants will gain valuable insights into the latest research and technological advancements, enabling them to apply these concepts to real-world challenges and innovations. Whether you are looking to deepen your understanding of heat exchangers or seeking to stay abreast of the latest developments in the field, this lecture series offers a thorough and engaging learning experience.

The lecture series co-directors are Prof. Delphine Laboureur (VKI), Mrs. Aude Lecardonnel (VKI) and Dr. Chiara Falsetti (TU Delft).

The participants of the lecture series will be able to share their valuable work through a poster. All posters will be exposed during the four days and available during breaks to present and discuss their research work with other researchers.  The PDF-file of the poster should be submitted to Aude Lecardonnel before the 15th of March.  For on-site participants, a lab visit is planned on the last day.
