Twee nieuwe installaties bij het von Karman Instituut stuwen MYRRHA voort

In aanwezigheid van Staatssecretaris Philippe Courard, huldigen het VKI en het SCK•CEN vandaag twee nieuwe unieke installaties in; één waarmee een seismische activiteit wordt nagebootst en een model op schaal van de onderzoeksreactor MYRRHA.
De installaties en het onderzoek van het von Karman Instituut (VKI) zijn wereldwijd bekend, vooral op het vlak van het milieu, turbomachines en ruimtevaart. De onderzoekers, die onder meer de vliegtuigmotoren van morgen stiller en ‘groener’ maken of de architectuur van onze steden optimaliseren om tocht en milieuverontreiniging te verminderen, leveren nu ook een bijdrage aan MYRRHA.

Memorandum of understanding (MoU) getekend rond het MYRRHA-project met het SCK•CEN

Myrrha LogoVandaag 10 januari 2011 werd in aanwezigheid van premier Yves Leterme, van Sabine Laruelle, federaal Minister van Wetenschapsbeleid en Voogdijminister van het von Karman Instituut, en van Paul Magnette, federaal Minister van Klimaat en Energie en Voogdijminister van het SCK•CEN, een Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) ondertekend tussen het von Karman Instituut (VKI) en het SCK•CEN. Het gaat om het uittesten van technieken en componenten die zullen gebruikt worden in de innovatieve MYRRHA-installatie, een onderzoeksinfrastructuur die als prioritair werd aangeduid door de Europese Commissie en die ontwikkeld wordt door onderzoekers van het SCK•CEN in Mol.

QB50, a network of 50 small satellites in space, approved by the European Commission

The QB50 Project, a network of 50 small satellites in space, was approved by the European Commission on 15 January 2012. The small satellites are ‘CubeSats’, fully functional, miniaturized satellites that are built by universities all over the world. Interest to participate in QB50 by signing a Letter of Intent has been expressed by 85 universities. For many of these countries, the CubeSats that participate in QB50 will be their first satellite in orbit and a matter of national prestige.

Innovative Wind Tunnel Testing for the Princess Elisabeth Station

The von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics, situated in Sint-Genesius-Rode, has helped to design the first Zero-Emission Research Station on Antarctica using innovative testing in the VKI L-1 wind tunnel, the largest facility in Belgium, with a 20m long test section and wind speeds up to 220 km/hr. To include wind as one of the main design drivers since the start of the project was an innovative choice of the International Polar Foundation. More than 40 years ago, the Belgian Baudouin Base had to be abandoned after it was completely covered by snow.
