The BIO facility is a scaled-up liquid model of biological flows within successive bifurcations. It is used primarily to investigate air flows within multiple lung bifurcations, and also to simulate aerosol displacement witin the lung.
The bifurcation model is built out of transparent silicon, and a silicone oil is used in the facility to allow the use of non-intrusive optical diagnostics technique such as PIV, to measure velocities and flow rates and PTV to follow aerosol particle displacement.
The facility is 0.8 m long, 1.5 m wide and 3.2 m high. Models at a scale of 50:1 are currently being studied.
