Vasilios Kourakos, graduate student of Prof. Jean-Marie Buchlin, Assist. Prof. Patrick Rambaud from VKI and Dr. Saïd Chabane from the French company Centre Technique des Industries Mécaniques, has been awarded the first place in the PhD category (Outstanding Student Paper) during the student paper competition at the ASME Pressure Vessel & Piping 2011 conference, held in July 2011 in Baltimore, USA.
The 19th Annual Rudy Scavuzzo Student Paper Symposium & Competition, sponsored by the PVPD Senate, has attracted a record number of entries. More than 700 technical papers have been published during the whole conference. A certificate of recognition, a $1000 Honorarium (for being a finalist) and an extra $1000 for the first place have been granted to V. Kourakos.
The paper is entitled: "Flowforce In Safety Relief Valve Under Incompressible, Compressible and Two-Phase Flow Conditions", written by V. Kourakos, S. Chabane, P. Rambaud and J.-M. Buchlin.
