    • Facilities

      The von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics has some of the most important and largest wind tunnel testing facilties in the world. Those facilities include low speed and high speed wind tunnels, plasma facilties as the well-know "plasmatron", water tunnel, turbomachinery facilities such as the biggest compression tube in the world "CT-3", ground vehicle facility, wind gallery, water spray, aeroacoustics and solid propulsion facilities, industrial test rigs.

    Academic Programme

     

    The von Karman Institute offers a wide variety of educational programs, going from short training internships and final year projects for undergraduate students over a full year of Research Master specialization, up to a complete PhD Research program:

     

     

     

     

     

    The RESEARCH MASTER IN FLUID DYNAMICS (master-after-master): An accredited Master after Master specialization program of one academic year, with courses and master thesis project (60 credits). Teaching and supervision by the VKI faculty

     

    The DOCTORAL PROGRAM: A multi-year program of basic research in fluid dynamics carried out in collaboration with a Belgian university or with the home university of the candidate.

     
    The SHORT TRAINING PROGRAM: A program to acquaint highly qualified undergraduate students with the practises of modern fluid dynamics.

     
    The BELGIAN UNIVERSITY MASTER THESIS PROGRAMME in fulfillment of the requirements of a Belgian University or Industrial Engineering school: Students enrolled in a engineering, industrial engineering or physics Master program at a Belgian University of Engineering School can carry out their Master Thesis project at the VKI under the supervision of a VKI faculty member, in agreement with their home university.
     
     
    The FOREIGN UNIVERSITY MASTER THESIS PROGRAMME in fulfillment of the requirements of a European or American University: Students enrolled in a engineering or physics Master program at a foreign (non-Belgian) University or Engineering School can carry out their Master Thesis project at the VKI under the supervision of a VKI faculty member, in agreement with their home university.

     

    The APPLIED RESEARCH ORIENTATION PROGRAM: graduates of the research master may be further instructed in the methodology of applied fluid dynamics and the practice of independant research.

    The educational and research programs of the Institute are organised within the following areas of specialisation:

    • Turbomachinery and Propulsion.

    The VKI operates a comprehensive range of experimental and computational facilities covering virtually all aspects of the above fields. Necessary support is provided by facility engineers, electronic and photographic laboratories, a computing centre, a technical library, a computer-aided drawing/design office and well-equipped workshops.

    • Research Master in Fluid Dynamics (Master-after-master level)

       Research Master in Fluid DynamicsThe Research Master of the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI) is a one-year postgraduate programme at “Master-after-Master” level (also known as VKI Diploma Course) with a 60-years tradition. The program offers a wide choice of specialised courses on various aspects of fluid dynamics. Half of the year is devoted to a personal research project under close guidance by members of the faculty. The research may be experimental, theoretical, or computational in nature. The VKI Research Master in Fluid Dynamics complements the master programmes of universities with a profound research oriented specialisation.

      UNIQUE INTERNATIONAL SETTING

      Originating from more than 10 countries, about thirty-five young engineers and scientists work  together in a unique international team spirit, following a tradition of excellence initiated by Theodore von Karman in 1956.

      ELIGIBILITY

      • Citizenship in one of the NATO countries. (Non-NATO nationals residing in NATO countries will be considered for admission if they are recommended by an STO National Delegate of their country of residence on the ground that their attendance at VKI would be beneficial to that country.)
      • A five-year engineering or science degree (3-year B.S. + 2-year M.S.) from a European university or a M.S. from an American, Canadian or Turkish University.
      • Endorsement of the applicant by an STO National Delegate.
      • A working knowledge of the English language

      There is no tuition fee for citizens of Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Norway,  Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey.

      Citizens of Canada, Denmark, The Netherlands, Poland, the U.K. and the U.S.A. may receive information on the tuition fee by writing to the Director of the von Karman Institute.

      CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

      Graduates of the VKI Research Master find a career in the research departments of industry (Airbus, Automotive, General Electric, Rolls-Royce, SNECMA, ...), in government  agencies and international research centers (ESA, DLR, NASA, ONERA, ...), or pursue their education in a doctoral programme.

      FELLOWSHIP

      Fellowships available for citizens from Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Luxemburg, Norway, Portugal, Romania and Turkey. No tuition fees requested for these countries!

      ACCREDITED BY NVAO (Nederlands-Vlaamse Accreditatieorganisatie)

      NVAO ensures the quality of educational programs following the Bologna agreement for higher education in Europe. The complete curriculum involves a minimum of 30 ECTS of courses and 30 ECTS for an independent research project, corresponding to one full academic year. In the syllabus, the admission and diploma requirements are reviewed first. Then the course syllabus for the current academic year is presented. A description of research activities provides an indication of the diverse possibilities for the individual research project.

      ARO ProgramGraduates of the research master may be further instructed in the methodology of applied fluid dynamics and the practice of independent research for periods from some months to one year (ARO program). Post-doctoral research is performed in the advanced-level applied research Program (AAR program).
