A new conservative multispecies BGK model

Wednesday 15 June 2016 - Wednesday 15 June 2016

Jeff Haack

Los Alamos National Laboratory

In this talk he will a derive conservative multi-species Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) relaxation model from the Boltzmann equation. This approach follows the spirit of the original single-species BGK model in that it conserves species masses, total momentum, and total kinetic energy and satisfies the H-theorem. The direct connection to the Boltzmann operator makes clear the direct connection between collision rates and Boltzmann cross sections. We study the transport properties of the model and apply the method to an interface problem relevant to inertial confinement fusion, comparing with theory and molecular dynamics results.
