The Wind EggIt is a great pleasure to invite you to an art event at the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI) on May 4, 2016. This one-day event is the culmination of three years of Haseeb Ahmed’s research at the Von Karman Institute for his PhD in Practice-Based Arts.

This artwork uses tools and techniques from fluid dynamics to conduct is a person interpretation of the Wind Egg, a proto-scientific theory predicated on the reproduction of animals and humans with the wind.

The day will consist of guided tours across selected VKI facilities including the ground-control station, the L2B, L1, and L7 wind tunnels. Moving from one space to the other, the spectator will experience the topic of the Wind Egg theory through sculptures, a theatrical performance with live actors and animals, a video projection, flow visualization, and experimental aero-acoustic music.

Directly inspired by the artistic breakthroughs of the experimental historical avant-gardes, this art event does not rely on classical concepts of wonder, beauty, and aesthetics. Instead the spectator will come into contact with alternative ways of understanding science and technology in an otherwise familiar context through art.

This is the first part of an unfolding trilogy; the second episode, Wird, will be at Harlan Levey Projects in Brussels in September 8, 2016.

Practical Information

The event will take place from 14:00 to 17:00 at von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics
Chaussée de Waterloo 72, 1640 Rhode-Saint-Genèse, Belgium.

For those travelling from Brussels, transport from Harlan Levey Projects Gallery (Jean d'Ardennestraat 46, 1050 Elsene) will be arranged, departing at 12:45 sharp.

Credits

The event includes contributions from artists Piero Bisello, Marc Matter, and Andros Zins-Browne and VKI engineers Yakut Cansev and Ertan Ümit, and physicist Jo Verbeeck of the University of Antwerp.

The event would not be possible without the support of:
- Prof. Olivier Chazot, Prof. Jeroen van Beek, and Prof. Vincent Van der Haegen at the VKI;
- The Size Matters artistic research group at the Zurich University of the Arts led by Prof. Florian Dombois, of which Haseeb Ahmed is a member, supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
- Harlan Levey Projects gallery team;
- Prof. Staf Van Tendeloo, head of the EMAT research group at the University of Antwerp;
- Werner Van dermeersch and Sint Lucas Antwerp University College of Art and Design.

This event is one in a series of three public moments culminating in Haseeb Ahmed’s PhD in practice-based Arts; a cooperation between the University of Antwerp Sint Lucas Antwerp Univeristy College of Art and Design, the Size Matters group at the Zurich University of the Arts, and the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics.
