FLUID DYNAMICS OF BIOLOGICAL FLOWS

VKI-LSFluid Dynamics is a discipline that has increasing importance in biology. This Lecture Series is intended for researchers, including physicians, in Biological Fluid Dynamics. Its objectives are to introduce newcomers to bio-fluid mechanics and to present the state-of-the-art to experienced researchers.
In this Lecture Series, initial presentations will provide a theoretical background on respiratory and cardiovascular Biofluid Mechanics. Specific courses on Cardiac and Vascular Biomechanics will be presented and will be followed by lectures on Pulmonary Biomechanics. Extensive courses on experimental and numerical modelling of the circulatory system and air flows within the lung will then be given. These courses will be illustrated by applications such as Patient specific modelling in cardiovascular as well as pulmonary applications. The course will furthermore give the opportunity to the participants to share their experiences in this multidisciplinary field which involves very many different competencies.
The Directors of this lecture series are Professor M.L. Riethmuller and Dr. P. Corieri of the von Karman Institute.
