The von Karman Institute undertakes and promotes research in the field of fluid dynamics. Extensive research on experimental, computational and theoretical aspects of liquid and gas flows is carried out at the VKI under the direction of the faculty and research engineers, sponsored mainly by governmental and international agencies as well as industries.

Forty-six wind tunnels and test rigs

The von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics has some of the most important and largest wind tunnel testing facilties in the world. Those facilities includes low speed and high speed wind tunnels, plasma facilties as the well-know "plasmatron", water tunnel, turbomachinery facilities such as the biggest compression tube in the world "CT-3", ground vehicle facility, wind gallery, water spray, aeroacoustics and solid propulsion facilities, industrial test rigs. Computational and theoretical modeling

For leading-edge research, you need first-rate computing performance , and we have invested and developed in the very best tool for multiphysics computations "CoolFluid", an object oriented platform and numerous commercial CFD codes.

 

  • Research Activities

    The von Karman Institute undertakes and instigates research in the field of theoretical and experimental fluid dynamics including numerical methods.  Extensive research on experimental, numerical and theoretical aspects of fluid dynamics, sponsored mainly by outside agency and industries, is carried out at the VKI under the direction of the Faculty and Research Engineers: aeronautics and aerospace, plasma flows, wind engineering, aeroacoustics, turbulent and two-phase flows, tubomachinbery and propulsion, applied fluid dynamics, computational fluid dynamics, measurement techniques, data post-processing.
